Video cameras aren't new to me. My father was the guy in the late 80s, throughout the 90s, and into the 2000s with a video camera strapped to his shoulder. He recorded everything. Thanks to my father, I have so many great memories I can look back on today. Sound clips of my aunt and grandma saying "Leon turn that camera off!" or "why you always recording?" We all look back on those videos and laugh, and we really appreciate them now - it keeps the memories fresh. Through my father, I found value in documenting life for the current and next generation. I learned that you can verbally tell great stories, but showing things on video gives you insight in ways you just can’t tell, a look at the way things actually were at that moment in time.
Fast forward a few decades and my personal storytelling journey started with photography. I picked up my first camera in 2015, A Nikon D5500, because I wanted to take better pictures of my car, my first hobby a Subaru Legacy SpecB that I fully rebuilt and took the the track. As the years went on it became more than a tool to capture my car, and I started taking pictures of family, friends, and things, too. I began documenting events and capturing my own memories. I found a lot of joy in the creative aspects of photography. I started thinking about how things I shot through my camera can't be replicated - when you take a picture or a video you freeze a moment in time. What is seen through that lens, at that second in time, can never be done exactly the same. There is beauty in that. From this passion of capturing my own memories and experiences, I began to want to capture more: the world around me. That's when street photography became my new hobby, and gone were the days of wrenching on a car all night. In 2021 I upgraded my camera and switched over to the Canon R, hopped on a plane to Iceland, and now to a dozen other destinations, documenting as I go.
My work includes shooting events, capturing people, showing off cars, and of course my travels. I also manage video projects, big and small. I enjoy going through the creative process of taking a vision and making it a reality. Whether it's my vision or the clients, that creative process is fun and exhilarating.
